You want to know why the Indira Brigade was found

The Indira Brigade

You want to know why the Indira Brigade was found out?

Not because of the police. Not because of some big investigation. Not because anyone grew a conscience.

Because of a courtroom attack. Because a man ran inside. Because a judge got angry.

Let me tell it straight.

What Was the Indira Brigade?

D Nataraj started it. Son-in-law of the Chief Minister, D Devaraj Urs. He told the press: “I want the Indira Brigade to function like the KGB. Intelligence unit. To protect Indira Gandhi.”

That was the lie.

The truth? It was a gang. Political muscle. Goondas with protection from the top.

He put Jayaraj P in charge. Bodybuilder. Fired from HAL. Ambitious. Empty-handed until Nataraj picked him up.

What Did They Do?

They started in parks. Couples sitting on benches. The Brigade would surround them, rob them, beat the boys, humiliate the girls. Why parks? Because lovers don’t go to the police. Easy target. No questions.

Then extortion. Shopkeepers. Businessmen. Pay or else.

Then the room.

The Room

Wilson Garden. 1978. Police raid Jayaraj’s house. Routine check. Big bungalow, nice area.

They check the garage out back. Find a room.

No windows. Soundproofed. Hook in the ceiling. Stains on the floor they couldn’t identify.

A torture chamber. In a residential neighbourhood. Owned by a man protected by the Chief Minister.

The officer told me: “We didn’t ask what happened there. We already knew. And we couldn’t do anything about it.”

Why not?

Because next week, Jayaraj walked into Wilson Garden police station. Walked to the inspector’s desk. Placed a sword on it. Didn’t speak. Just stood there.

What do you do?

Nothing. You let him walk out.

How Were They Found?

Not because of the room. Not because of the sword. Not because of the parks.

Because of Gopi Thigalarpete. Wanted rowdy. January 25, 1977. Walking into court number 2.

Jayaraj’s men waiting. A dozen of them. Sword under a shawl. They attack.

Gopi runs. Inside the courtroom. Toward the judge. Bleeding, but alive.

He records his statement. Names names. Tells everything.

And the judge—Chandrasekaraya—he becomes the complainant himself. Rare. Almost unheard of. A judge saying: “I saw it. I’ll speak.”

That’s how they were caught. Not the system working. One man running. One judge acting.

Jayaraj got ten years in 1979.

What Happened to the Brigade?

Without Jayaraj, it dissolved. Not defeated. Not dismantled. Just empty.

The men who paid for that torture room? Never questioned. The men who ordered park beatings? Never saw a courtroom. Nataraj? Never touched. Never held accountable.

They just moved on.

Money came. IT companies. Coffee shops. Young people with laptops. The blood got paved over.

But I remember.

A room with a hook. A sword on a desk. A judge who spoke.

And forty years later, still no one called to account.

The Indira Brigade? They’re still here. Just changed their name.
