Mahiti’s Turn

As the crowd settled down, Mahiti’s father was trying hard to hold his emotions, feeling sad for her daughter’s heartbreak. But he was happy that he could bring her daughter to the palace to give some solace to her aching heart. He tried to console Mahiti, much to her surprise.

Mahiti tried to control her tears and managed it with great effort. She was unsure she would be able to stand in front of her king to show her painting. She may just break down! But she wouldn’t budge. She had to do it. She knew it could be her last chance, to even see her Ravana so close. She didn’t want to miss that chance. She didn’t want to disgrace her father by doing something stupid too. Mahiti fought hard to hold her tears and emotions.

Soon, the king settled on his throne and the minister started calling the artists one by one to perform. All Mahiti could do was to stare at the King’s charismatic persona. She would hardly have blinked her eyes, not wanting to miss a second of being able to see her king, in flesh, up so close. She was so deeply in love! Tears kept flowing now and then, and Mahiti would gracefully wipe them away without blinking, smiling all through. She was a brave girl. She was seriously in love!

When the minister called out Mahiti’s name, she didn’t actually hear it! She was still gazing longingly at her king. Mahiti’s father nudged her lightly to alert her. She mustered up some courage and started walking towards the king. She had forgotten why she was there! She didn’t pick her painting which was still with her father. He realized her daughter’s emotional turmoil and helped her by bringing it to her as if that was how it was planned! Mahiti felt stupid for a moment and thanked her father with her eyes. He understood her totally and smiled back reassuringly. This gave Mahiti some more courage and she focused on showing it to the king first and then the audience.

The king was pleasantly surprised at what Mahiti had drawn. The garden was beautiful, though not as splendid as it actually was. He knew that Mahiti would never have imagined his garden and wondered how she managed to capture the garden’s image so beautifully. What stunned him the most was the subject she chose to paint. The sad and bold Sita! He stood up in surprise and demanded to have a closer look.

Mahiti was taken by surprise at Ravana’s act. She never imagined it would impact the king this much. She had expected the king to have a glance and move on to the next performer. But here she had, his attention completely on her, rather, her painting. She didn’t miss a second of this moment. Her eyes were closely watching Ravana’s as he stood astonished at every element of Mahiti’s painting.
