The Lingodbhava – The Endless Pillar of Light
Once, Lord Brahma (the creator) and Lord Vishnu (the preserver) began arguing about who was supreme.
Brahma said proudly, “I created the universe. Without me, nothing would exist.”
Vishnu replied calmly, “But I preserve and sustain creation. That makes me superior.”
Their argument grew intense. Suddenly, a blinding pillar of fire appeared between them. It stretched beyond the skies and deep into the earth — with no visible beginning or end.

A divine voice challenged them:
“Find the beginning or end of this pillar. Whoever succeeds is supreme.”
Vishnu took the form of a boar (Varaha) and burrowed downward to find the base. He traveled for thousands of years but found no end.
Brahma turned into a swan (Hamsa) and flew upward endlessly. He too failed to find the top. On his way back, he encountered a falling Ketaki flower. Brahma convinced the flower to falsely testify that he had reached the top.
When they returned, Vishnu honestly admitted defeat. Brahma lied and claimed victory, presenting the flower as proof.

At that moment, the pillar split open, and Lord Shiva emerged from the infinite light. His voice thundered across the cosmos:
“I am the beginningless and endless reality. I am beyond creation and destruction.”
Angered by Brahma’s dishonesty, Shiva declared that Brahma would no longer be widely worshipped on Earth. The Ketaki flower was also forbidden from being offered in Shiva’s worship.
This manifestation of Shiva as the infinite pillar of light is believed to have happened on the night of Shivaratri. It symbolizes that the Divine has no beginning or end.
