Episode – 7:Lord Shiva’s Teachings and Guidelines to Ravana

The Asura King of Lanka, Ravana, is the author of the Ravana Samhita. It is a collection of guidelines and secrets that Lord Siva personally disclosed to Ravana. When Siva unexpectedly went into Ravana’s home one day, he discovered him dozing off. Ravana knelt on the ground, showing respect. He knelt, pleading with Siva to pardon him for his inadvertent transgression. In response, Siva said that giving birth to a human was a challenging task and that it was not commendable of Ravana’s wisdom to be daydreaming, particularly at this particular moment. Ravana asked Siva to pardon the transgression and show sympathy for his (obedient) servant. Ravana went on to ask Siva to give him instructions on which evil deeds he should give up.

Siva answered, “My friend, I shall reveal to you things that are even hidden from the gods.” Listen to what I have to say. Whoever believes what I have to say will no longer be held accountable for their actions. Dear Ravana, It is improper for a guy to extinguish a glowing lamp.

The deity being worshipped is present in the person’s body on the day of the fast. Therefore, one should avoid female company, sleep on the floor, and maintain personal hygiene on the day of the fast. The gods will be happy and bestow their blessings upon someone who just eats fruits and also gives (charits) to some brahmins.

Copper is thought to be the purest of all the metals. It is stated that taking a bath in a copper vessel has the same benefits as taking a bath in the (holy) Ganga. Dear Ravana, Worship, fasting, and honoring one’s departed ancestors are all things that one must practice; one cannot disregard them.

When a stranger or alien makes a request, one should grant it in accordance with their faith. [Refrain from ignoring his request, O Ravana!] Whatever you do, do it in the name of Narayana, or God; you will not be held accountable and you will not experience hardship.

When conversing during meals, avoid speaking negatively about other people and avoid telling lies. A married guy should never use ill or spiteful words to his spouse. Considering that his spouse is the first of his well-wishers and his better half. If a man sits (idly) on his home’s threshold from dawn to dusk, his debts will increase and the fortune he has amassed via good acts will be exhausted.

After learning of this covert conversation, Ravana became extremely depressed. Observing him in a reflective state, Siva, touched by pity, erased the ailment from his consciousness. He declared, “The baseness of your work is what brought this hidden secret to light.” Whoever believes what I have disclosed, it will be advantageous to them.

“This boat (ark) of moral guidance shall help me cross the ocean of life,” Ravana retorted. What ability do I have to commend it? Guard me, that is, give me more guidance. Then, seeing that Ravana was his most senior commander, Siva gave him the following orders:

Dear Ravana, Do not refuse another being’s request for food if he makes one. There is no greater virtue on this planet than granting another person’s wish. Because God’s satisfaction is found in the happiness of a living thing. Don’t steal, borow, or beg. Remain content with what the Almighty Lord has kindly provided you. When Ravana heard this, he praised Siva and asked him to remove his ignorance. Dear Ravana, A person should never eat by themselves while they are seated among other people and have brought food with them. [He bears the blame]

A brother or other male relative should never sit on the bed that a married man shares with his spouse. [He bears the blame] The individual who calms their thoughts and has a single thought while attentively listening to religious teachings will ultimately reach paradise! Dear Ravana, Your girlfriend will become infertile if you refuse to accept something that has been handed to you (for safekeeping). [In a symbolic sense]

How will a father deal with his (own) son if he berates his family or clan?

A person who feels good about themselves or who enjoys hearing their own praise from others is not going to benefit from it! One should never speak harshly to their father or older brother. The guy who, out of cowardice, deserts his lord or master in the middle of combat will be cursed. [martialed by the court]

A person’s life (in this world) is like that of an animal if they do not visit the Ganga or other destinations of pilgrimage during their lifetime. Dear Ravana, Sin is defined as harming your tribe, taking a life, or disparaging someone without cause.

When Ravana heard this, he inquired as to who, if the man was in good health, would present water to their long-dead ancestors—a rite or prayer meant to placate the spirits of the dead. In response, Siva stated that a faithful (and chaste) wife may offer water to departed ancestors if a man is childless.

Dear Ravana, Man achieves his goals only after putting in a tremendous deal of work, prayer, and commitment. Man ought to be content with what God has provided; joy and suffering, prosperity and loss, good and bad, ought to be seen equally. Your brother and parents won’t be able to assist you when the end draws near; only your good acts will endure.

Killing a Brahmin is equivalent to chopping down a mango tree, and a garden full of trees yields a merit equivalent to a thousand sacrifices. It should be noted that the son’s actions have an impact on the parent. After hearing this speech, Ravana became quite reflective.

He said, “I have understood some of what you have said, and I have not understood some of it,” to Siva. When the time comes, how will I be saved?

When Siva noticed that Ravana was overcome with grief, he comforted him out of kindness. He advised Ravana to practice patience, meditation, and not to think too much.Because this speech will help him find salvation and be released from sin.

Siva exclaims, “O Ravana!” The individual who is angry and hurt by the success or fortune of others will suffer in the afterlife and become impoverished in this one. Ravana requested additional guidance from Siva. Siva once declared that a man will regret disobeying his master’s commands.

Ravana asked Siva, “What would happen if the man were given a task that were unreasonable or impossible to carry out?” after hearing this. Siva retorted that he should try his hardest to complete that duty until additional instructions are given.

What if Siva completely failed in his duties, Ravana questioned?

In response, Siva said that the man ought to beg the good lord’s pardon for his transgression. A person who sets out on a (religious) pilgrimage should not pause to partake in other people’s hospitality along the route. When a child is weeping, neither the mother nor the father should hit or injure them.

Dear Ravana, A man ought to provide his servant their appropriate pay.

Regarding remarriage, Siva asserts that a widower who remarries will not have happiness, prosperity, or children in this life. In response, Ravana says that a man is not at fault if he marries again without any problems. But, he shouldn’t get married if he has children from a previous marriage.

Siva exclaims, “O Ravana!” A person who remembers this talk will be happy in this world as well as the afterlife. And he will perform his duty to God with a cheerful disposition and an altruistic heart.
