The Samudra Manthan
During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain Amrita (nectar of immortality).
Instead of nectar, a deadly poison called Halahala first emerged. It was so powerful it could destroy the entire universe.

To save creation:
Lord Shiva drank the poison.
Goddess Parvati held his throat so the poison wouldn’t spread.
His throat turned blue, giving him the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one).
Shivaratri is believed to be the night when Shiva consumed the poison to protect the world.
